Oct. 13--Construction projects on the greenhouse for the Silver Bay eco-industrial park are being split up in hopes of keeping costs low.

City crews will be doing site work in preparation of the project. Concrete work was bid out to Lakeside Masonry and Ray Riihiluoma Inc. will do a majority of the construction.

Once the greenhouse is built, the University of Minnesota Duluth Center for Sustainable Development will come in and install the water flow system for the fish tank system, which will be paid for in part by an Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board grant. Silver Bay city council members met for a special council meeting last Friday to approve of the separation of the construction duties for the greenhouse.

The plans to separate services have to be reviewed by LHB Corp, the engineering firm that designed the eco-industrial park project, before contract prices are set. In July, the low bid for the greenhouse project was for about $1.47 million from Ray Riihiluoma but the city had expected the project to cost around $900,000. The bids were tabled so construction costs could be evaluated again in hopes of getting a lower price.

Plans for the eco-industrial park, off State Highway 61 on the waterfront just north of County Highway 5, include a biomass heat and power facility, a greenhouse that could grow food for distribution within the city, and a fish farm that would make use of fish waste to grow algae for biodiesel fuel.

A groundbreaking ceremony is set for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 24 with county and state officials expected to attend.

City administrator Lana Fralich said the excitement for the eco-industrial park should take off after the event. Project coordinator Bruce Carman said "there are a lot of eyes watching Silver Bay right now" to see how the project will pan out.

Council member Carlene Perfetto anticipated the effects an eco-industrial park could have on Silver Bay. "This is a start of bringing educated people from Silver Bay back home."

Are there any updates on this? I have been waiting for an eco friendly park to be constructed here. This will be a great place to spend the afternoon with family and children.

Last time I heard, it's still under construction Hollie... But that was a long while back, maybe it's finished now.

I guess it's already finished because they're already ground breaking. It'll be great if you update us with the construction.
